Lighting a Hockey Field

Lighting for Hockey Floodlights Illuminance levels Dimensions Specifications Sports guide

Lighting a Hockey field :

When lighting a Hockey field, certain standards must be met to ensure that the lighting is suitable to the category of your facility:

  • International category
  • Categories 1 and 2 (International Elite and National 1 Men’s and Women’s matches)
  • Categories 3 and 4 (National 2 and National 3 Men’s and Women’s matches)
  • Category 5 (Training)

Depending on the category of your facility, we will choose the number of floodlights and their power to achieve the necessary lighting result.

The Speqtris Sport range of fixtures for Field Hockey lighting :

To light large surface areas like Hockey fields, we generally use powerful LED floodlights, with narrow angles of diffusion to evenly distribute as much light as possible over the field  :

Hockey Field illuminance:

Illuminance levels are those recommended by the International Hockey Federation. They differ with the various categories of field  :

Horizontal illuminance uniformity factor :

The horizontal uniformity of a Hockey field is always ≥ 0.7. Uniformity is important to ensure that light is evenly distributed over the whole field for player comfort and safety.

Hockey Field Dimensions:

Technical specifications are a document necessary for any public procurement contract. They define the buyer’s requirements. For hockey field lighting, illuminance standards must be met to ensure that each lighted field is compliant.

Recommended illuminance levels :

Category 5 – 150 Lux = Training

Categories 3 & 4 – 250 Lux = National 2 and 3

Categories 1 & 2 – 400 Lux = International Elite & National 1

“International” Category – 500 Lux

Recommended add-ons :

  • General timer over defined time slots (e.g. 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.)
  • Light sensor (on/off)
  • Non-stop mode (for events

Field Hockey VariBOX :

  • Wireless Radio Solution: an RF device is fitted onto each pole, avoiding the need for wiring between the unit and the floodlights. This solution is ideal for upgrades when poles are already in place.
  • Hard-wired solution: a DALI bus (electrical wiring) is installed between the light fixtures on each pole and the VariBOX control unit. This is a simple solution to install when creating lighting for new facilities.
  • Control Unit: The VariBOX unit will be ideally positioned, either at the foot of a lighting pole or inside the club house. The front panel, featuring all the controls, also gives a quick view of different levels and lighted half-fields.
