FIELD HOCKEY
LIGHTING

Field hockey is played on a large field. The entire playing area must be illuminated according to lighting standards defined by the International Hockey Federation. Speqtris Sport will assist you with all your relamping and design projects.

What are the lighting standards for field hockey?

It’s important to choose the right LED floodlights for your field hockey stadium. With the right quantity and proper positioning, it will be possible to match the lighting level to the standards imposed by the International Hockey Federation.

At Speqtris Sport, we base all our studies on the general lighting standard NF EN 12193 as well as the federal standards for each discipline.

We are committed to providing you with the lighting you need based on your field and its classification, in order to meet your expectations and those of the FIH. As with football or rugby stadiums, our design office will recommend a specific installation, taking into account everything necessary for your new lighting project, including the number of floodlights, their placement, their positions and diffusion angles, their power output, etc.

Our bright recommendation

Goliath, the floodlight for large outdoor pitches

The Goliath range of LED luminaires has been specially designed for large pitches such as field hockey, rugby, and soccer fields.

Ideal for large playing areas, the Goliath will blend perfectly with your field hockey pitch, providing all the light you need to play your sport.

600W 960W 1 200W 1 500W 1 800W

Why choose this range of LED floodlights?

These are the best floodlights for large outdoor pitches. They feature the highest power of our LED floodlights, which is perfectly suited to the characteristics of field hockey pitches. With a large surface area to illuminate and tall masts, floodlights powerful enough to cover the entire playing area are required.

We offer this floodlight in five power ratings, from 600 to 1800W, to adapt to the stadium’s needs. Combined with its luminous efficacy of 160lm/W, it provides uniform lighting while eliminating any shadows. This makes it easy to match the required lighting level with the appropriate Goliath LED floodlights.

Is this floodlight durable?

The lifespan of a Goliath LED floodlight is calculated according to the various durability standards L70, L80, or L90.

To ensure maximum efficiency, floodlight maintenance should not be neglected. They are very likely to be exposed to bad weather, which can lead to a decrease in illumination over time. Raindrops dry on the floodlights, creating a thin layer of dust that slightly obstructs the emitted light. Occasional cleaning will therefore help maintain a good level of illumination and uniformity, ideal for hockey practice.

Lifespan at 25°C at 30°C at 45°C
L70 326 000h 300 000h 287 000h
L80 197 000h 175 000h 162 000h
L90 82 000h 80 000h 78 000h

Can these luminaires be affected by rain or impacts?

No problem! These floodlights, certified IP66 (protection against moisture and dust) and IK10 (protection against impacts), will easily withstand rain or even possible collisions.

Need to broadcast matches on television?

Our Goliath LED luminaires are equipped with “Flicker-Free” drivers. This technology eliminates projector flicker to ensure stable lighting. This is ideal for video recording because it prevents pulsing flashes on the screen. Furthermore, this type of driver is preferable, compared to others, for maintaining the well-being of users (players, referees, spectators, coaches, etc.).

4-masts layout

For an installation on 4 masts, the following arrangement will be observed :

For this example, one of the most powerful floodlights in the range was installed: the Goliath 1200W.

In this case, there are 7 floodlights per pole, or 28 luminaires, with the following orientations :

Lighting levels and uniformities in field hockey

When lighting a field hockey pitch, certain standards must be met to ensure adequate lighting for the game, depending on the pitch category.

The lighting levels are those recommended by the FIH and vary depending on the pitch category :

Categories International 1 & 2 3 & 4 5
Non-televised meetings 500 Lux 400 Lux 250 Lux 150 Lux
Televised meetings 2000 Lux

Uniformity Factors in Field Hockey

The horizontal lighting uniformity of a field hockey field is always the same, i.e., ≥ 0.7. Uniformity is important to ensure well-distributed and even lighting across the entire field and thus ensure adequate playing comfort.

Integrate field hockey standards in your CCTP (Special Technical Specifications)

The CCTP (Special Technical Specifications) is a required document for any public procurement. It helps determine the buyer’s needs. For rugby field lighting, lighting standards must be met to ensure compliance for each stadium to be lit.

Your tailored lighting management solution, the VariBOX

By upgrading your old spotlights to LED lighting, you can save up to 50% on your electricity bill !

By adding one of our VariBOX boxes, you can save up to 80% on energy.

Our boxes will adapt the lighting to your needs with different brightness levels.

Our VariBOX is a ready-to-install device with various lighting management and control options, whether wired or wireless.

What are the recommended brightness levels?

  • Category 5 – 150 Lux = Training
  • Categories 3 & 4 – 250 Lux = National 2 and 3
  • Categories 1 & 2 – 400 Lux = International Elite & National 1
  • “International” Category – 500 Lux

Recommended options for managing a field hockey pitch

  • Half-pitch lighting during training, for example
  • General clock for the defined time slot (e.g., general lighting cutoff from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.)
  • On/off light sensor that will turn off the lights if natural light is sufficient for practice
  • Forced operation (in case of an event)

Field Hockey VariBOX – Our installation recommendations for your stadium

  • Wireless Radio Solution : Install an RF device on each mast, with no wiring between the control panel and the floodlights. This is the ideal solution for renovations when the masts are already in place.
  • Wired Solution : Install a DALI bus (electrical wiring) between the luminaires located on each mast and the VariBOX control panel. This is a simple solution to implement on new fields.
  • Control Panel : The VariBOX control panel will be ideally located either at the base of a lighting mast or in the clubhouse. The front panel allows you to quickly view the different levels, the illuminated half-fields, and manage all controls.
