Why install a VariBOX in a gymnasium ?

In the current context, with rising electricity prices, saving energy is a priority and moving to LED technology is vital.

Installing LED floodlights in a gymnasium can save more than 50% on the facility’s power consumption.

With a VariBOX and the right add-ons, i.e. the additional features that are truly suited to the specific gymnasium, the savings can exceed 80%!

Let’s take the example of a gymnasium that has no lighting management :

Whatever they are used for, the lights will always be on full power. Yet, many different people use the gymnasium, such as club members, groups of school children, the caretaker and cleaning staff. And they do not all need the same level of light. School children, the caretaker and the cleaning staff do not need full-power lighting and they are the ones who are most often in the gym. Club members only use it in the evening on weekdays, and during weekend competitions.

That’s why lighting management will reduce the power consumption by creating several levels of light. For example, one level for school children, the caretaker and the cleaning staff, another level for training and a third for competitions at full power. In addition, to avoid activating the full-power competition mode, there is often a key to unlock this level of lighting, which only the appropriate persons hold.

For a gymnasium, some options can be useful for saving energy:

  • As in the previous section, multi-level switch-on is recommended to match the power to the facility’s use.
  • light sensor can be added if the gymnasium has windows.
  • Motion detectors avoid lights being left on.
  • timer with a switch-off warning function reduces the use of lights.
  • An astronomical clock can force switch-off when the facility is closed.

For more information about these options, see the chart below !

Our VariBOX units can manage 1 to 4 courts simultaneously

Note that when we say court, we actually mean “area”. So, to create two areas of lighting on a court or pitch, a “2-court” VariBOX will be needed.

Naturally, if your gymnasium has one hall for team sports and another for gymnastics and you only need one management system per hall, then the “2-court” VariBOX is also suitable.

VariBOX options

All our VariBOX units include :

  • Illuminance levels :

Adjusts the illuminance of your lights to the activity. Up to four individually adjustable switch-on levels. Levels 2, 3 and 4 can be secured with a key-operated button.

2 levels: Leisure: 50% / Competition: 100%

3 levels: Leisure: 40% / Training: 60% / Competition: 100%

4 levels: Services: 20% / Leisure: 40% / Training: 60% / Competition: 100%

  • Booster

Booster/Dali or 1-10V converter to intensify the signal in the BUS and adapt to the dimming protocols. This allows all the lights to dim at the same time with no bus length requirement (up to 300m). Allow 1 booster per area, court or line with approximately 16 luminaires on the bus.

  • Key-operated switch

Secured by a key, this avoids accidental high-power switch-on (can be added for intermediate levels). It can also be used to shunt all the options pre-programmed in the VariBOX.

  • Separate ½-court/pitch control

Two push-buttons added for manual switch-on of each half-court/pitch

  • Additional control

One push-button added (with no dimming) to manage an extra area (e.g. stands, corridor, mezzanine, etc.).

  • Manual dimmer

Addition of a dimmer button to lower or increase the output of the luminaires and therefore their power and energy consumption.

.

  • On/Off light sensor

Detects the level of natural light and switches off the luminaires when the light is sufficient for a set period of time (adjustable timer and illuminance function). No automatic switch-on after the lights are out. To be installed in the darkest area of the hall.

  • Variable light sensor

Detects the level of natural light and adjusts the lighting accordingly (dimming)to it as it varies. When the natural light is sufficient for a set period of time over a determined period, the luminaires switch off (adjustable time and illuminance). No automatic switch-on after the lights are out. To be installed in the darkest area of the hall.

  • Standard Clock

Allows a complete shutdown to be set over a given period of time. Example: Switch-on is inhibited between 10 pm and 7 am.

  • Premium clock

Time management of the facility to inhibit or allow switch-on at different times of the day and for each level. Example: level 1 only from 8 am to 6 pm, all levels from 6 pm to 10 pm, and switch-on inhibited from 10 pm to 7 am.

  • Timer & Switch-off warning function

Adjustable timer triggered upon floodlight switch-on. At the end of the timer, a switch-off warning triggers and quickly dims the lights to 10% for 5 or 10 minutes to allow users to leave safely.

  • Motion detector

Triggers switch-off when no motion is detected for 10 minutes (adjustable time). No automatic switch-on after the lights are out.

Area of coverage: 35 x 18 metres to 8 metres high.

Area of coverage: 2x (30 x 20 metres) to 8 metres high.

  • Basic remote control

Supply of an additional unit with level-1 control and switch-off to be installed in another room, when the main VariBOX unit is not in the same room.

  • Premium remote control

Supply of an additional unit with all the VariBOX controls to be installed in another room, when the main VariBOX unit is not in the same room.

  • Terminal block

Positioned inside the VariBOX for an extra command or access management connection (connection of a dry contact signal).

  • Wireless RF transmitter

Radiofrequency transmitter in the VariBOX for wireless transmission of commands.

  • Wireless RF receiver

Wireless radiofrequency receiver for VariBOX commands. Allow one receiver per lighting pole, line or area. The receiver is installed upstream from the first luminaire on the relevant dimmer BUS terminal.

  • RF Remote Control

Radiofrequency remote control for remote switch-on or manual dimming.
